5 Ways to Keep Baby Happy in the Car

Published on by Laurie Shepherd

Hello World!

Sorry for the late post. My family and I were on vacation last week, and this blog is not well-read enough to merit taking time out of that to write a post. :)

That being said, since we spent a good deal of our time in the car, I have figured out many ways of keeping our little free-spirited 7-month-old relatively happy in the car. Hope you enjoy and please feel free to comment your own suggestions below!

5 Ways to Keep Baby Happy in the Car

1. New and interesting snacks:

A couple of days before leaving on our vacation, I went to the story and bought some snacks that I had never gotten for Eleanor before. These included different flavours of fruit packs and cereal puffs. Pulling out these snacks with their different textures and taste was enough to keep her occupied for many of the long hours on the road. Of course, making sure she wasn't hungry made the time spent in the car much more pleasurable too.

2. Stuffed animals:

Normally, we haven't taken any of her stuffed animals in the car with us. Whenever we would pull out her bear from behind her car seat her face would light up and she would happily play with Nom Nom or Bubear for awhile

3. New and Interesting Toys:

Or, they don't have to be toys at all! My hairbrush for example would make her quite happy and quiet. Other ideas include keys, of course, plastic lids from restaurant drinks, empty cups, and even her shoes for crying out loud. We all know that the car can get rather crowded with random stuff...make it a toy!

4. Music:

Now, I'm not sure if this is every baby, but ours seems to really like loud music. ;) Doesn't really matter what genre and since, thankfully, neither Joe nor I mind loud music, we just crank it up and enjoy the music together.

5. Being there:

Eleanor is a very personal baby. She enjoys physical contact and want to know that we are with her. Sometimes, after waking up from a nap in her car seat, I think she would get confused as to where she was and where we were. She would start to get fussy, but if one of us moved to the back, she would be all smiles again. Sometimes, just knowing and seeing that you are there is enough for a small child to feel secure. Yes, it means you have to sit in the back with the baby, but it is a small price to pay for peace in the car. Now, if you are traveling alone, you may have to just stop the car and have some cuddles with your little one.
